The Rocky Mountain University Electroneuromyography Training Program comes to Montgomery, Alabama, November 8–15, 2026.

Most clinicians who want to add EMG and nerve conduction studies to their practice never do. Not because the science is beyond them, but because there is nowhere to learn it properly. Weekend seminars hand you a slide deck. Online courses hand you a video. Neither one puts a needle in your hand, a patient on the table, and a board-certified electroneuromyographer standing behind your shoulder telling you how to do it right.

This program does exactly that, for 108 contact hours.

THE CASE FOR THIS SKILL

Why Electrodiagnostic Testing Changes a Practice

A patient presents with numbness in the hand. Is it carpal tunnel syndrome? A C6 radiculopathy? A proximal median neuropathy? Thoracic outlet? An early polyneuropathy? A clinical exam narrows the field. Imaging shows you structure, not function. Electrodiagnostic testing tells you which nerve, at which segment, how badly, how long it has been going on, and whether it is getting better.

That answer is worth something to the patient, to the referring surgeon who needs to know whether to operate, and to your practice.

Three reasons clinicians add EMG/NCS:

It resolves diagnostic dead ends. Electrodiagnostic studies are the only tools that directly measure nerve and muscle function. When the MRI is equivocal and the exam is mixed, this is what settles the question.

It makes you the referral destination. In most markets, there are very few providers performing high-quality electrodiagnostic studies. Orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, primary care physicians, and pain management practices all need this study to be performed well and reported clearly. Providers who do it become the person those referral sources call.

It is a durable clinical service line. EMG and NCS are established, reimbursable diagnostic procedures with defined CPT coding. 

The specialty is genuinely small

As of July 2026, the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties had certified 281 Electrophysiologic Clinical Specialists in the entire United States since the first examination in 1986. Fewer than three hundred, nationwide, in forty years.

That is the scarcity you would be stepping into.

WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS

A University Curriculum. A Working Clinic. An Eight-Day Immersion.

The Basic Electroneuromyography Training Program was built by Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions to meet the scholarly and clinical needs of the beginning electroneuromyographer. It has been refined over decades by the faculty who largely built this specialty in physical therapy.

In 2026, The EMG Solutions Institute is hosting the program in Montgomery, Alabama.

The structure

Before you arrive — online, at your own pace, 44 hours. Anatomy and Physiology of Nerve and Muscle opens ahead of the onsite session. You complete it before you set foot in the lab, so that day one is spent with your hands on equipment rather than reviewing membrane physiology.

November 8–15 — onsite, 64 hours. Eight consecutive days of lecture, demonstration, and supervised hands-on practice at EMG Solutions in Montgomery. Nine courses. Eight instructors, each teaching the material they specialize in.

The part that matters most

Students work in pairs. Every pair has its own plinth and its own EMG machine.

You will not watch a demonstration and go home. You will run the study yourself — median motor recording from the thenar eminence, ulnar segmental studies across the elbow, tibial H-reflex, needle examination of the cervical paraspinals — with an instructor at the machine assisting your electrode placement, your filter settings, your stimulation technique, and your interpretation in real time.

Sixty-four hours of that is why this program produces clinicians who can actually perform the study.

The sequence is deliberate. You begin with the upper extremity nerve studies that make up the bulk of clinical practice, add electromyography once you are comfortable with the instrumentation, layer in pathology once you can recognize normal, and finish with the lower extremity and full case interpretation.

What You Will Actually Learn

ENMG 100 — Anatomy and Physiology of Nerve and Muscle

Michael Skurja, Jr., PT, DPT, ECS (Emeritus) · Online, asynchronous, self-paced — completed before the onsite session

The foundation everything else rests on. Neuromuscular anatomy and physiology with emphasis on membrane excitability, nerve and muscle fiber depolarization, motor and sensory integration, classification of nerve and muscle fibers, neuromuscular transmission, and muscle contraction. Establishes the electrophysiologic basis for electrical testing and reviews the gross anatomy you will need daily, including the brachial and lumbosacral plexus.

This course must be completed before you arrive in Montgomery.

ENMG 101 — Electromyography I: Instrumentation, Normal EMG, Upper Extremity

William D. Eisner, PT, DSc, ECS · Onsite lecture and lab, 4 hours

Instrumentation from the ground up: the oscilloscope, amplifiers, filter systems, and electrodes. The electrophysiology of the dipole and quadrupole. Then the thing every electromyographer must know cold before they can recognize disease — what normal looks and sounds like. Analysis of normal insertional activity, spontaneous activity, and motor unit potentials, followed by supervised needle examination of selected muscles of the shoulder girdle, shoulder, and arm.

ENMG 102abc — Nerve Studies I: Upper Extremity

Darin White, PT, DPT, ECS · Onsite lecture and lab, 16 hours

The largest single block in the program, and the backbone of upper extremity practice. You will perform:

  • Median motor studies recording from the thenar eminence and the second lumbrical
  • Median sensory studies recording from the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers
  • Ulnar motor studies recording from the hypothenar eminence and the first dorsal interosseous, including segmental studies across the elbow
  • Ulnar sensory studies from the ring and little fingers, and across the elbow
  • Anterior interosseous and radial motor studies
  • Radial sensory studies
  • F-wave studies of the median and ulnar nerves

Throughout, the pathology of the median, ulnar, and radial nerves and how it presents in the data in front of you.

ENMG 102d — Nerve Studies II: Upper Extremity

Bryan Green, PT, DPT, ECS · Onsite lecture and lab, 8 hours

The proximal and less commonly taught studies that separate a complete upper extremity examination from a partial one: motor studies of the suprascapular, axillary, and spinal accessory nerves, and sensory studies of the lateral and medial antebrachial cutaneous nerves. Includes discussion of the associated pathology and consolidation practice on everything from ENMG 102abc.

ENMG 200 — Pathology I: Muscle and Nerve Pathology

David Greathouse, PT, PhD, ECS, FAPTA · Onsite lecture, 8 hours

A full day with one of the most decorated figures in the field. Nerve and muscle pathology in depth: demyelination, axonal degeneration, axonal sprouting, axonal regeneration, and the classification of nerve injuries. Then the work of correlating normal and abnormal EMG and NCS data with specific pathological conditions — mononeuropathies of the upper and lower extremities, cervical, lumbar, and sacral radiculopathies, and polyneuropathies.

This is the day the numbers start meaning something.

ENMG 201 — Electromyography II: Abnormal EMG, Motor Unit Analysis, Upper Extremity Muscles

Having established normal in ENMG 101, you now learn to identify and analyze abnormal insertional activity, abnormal spontaneous activity, and abnormal motor unit potentials. Supervised needle examination of selected muscles of the forearm, hand, and cervical paraspinals.

ENMG 204abc — Nerve Studies III: Lower Extremity

Nathan J. Savage, PT, DPT, PhD, ECS, OCS · Onsite lecture and lab, 12 hours

The lower extremity in full:

  • Motor studies of the femoral nerve, tibial nerve including the medial and lateral plantar branches, and fibular nerve including recording from tibialis anterior
  • Sensory studies of the saphenous, sural, and superficial fibular nerves
  • Tibial and fibular F-waves
  • The tibial H-reflex

Plus evaluation of reports that integrate pathology with testing, and discussion of the mononeuropathies of the lower extremity.

ENMG 301 — Electromyography III: Lower Extremity Muscles

Carlos Estevez, PT, DPT, ECS, OCS · Onsite lecture and lab, 8 hours

Needle examination of the muscles of the lower extremity and the lumbosacral paraspinals. Lecture, demonstration, and extensive supervised practice.

Case Study Review

Rick Nielsen, PT, DHSc, ECS · Onsite, 4 hours

The synthesis. Real studies, real data, worked through as a group: problem solving and correlation of normal and abnormal EMG and NCS findings across myopathies, neuromuscular junction disorders, plexopathies, motor neuron disease, and the presentations you are most likely to see in practice. You leave having reasoned your way through complete cases from referral question to written impression.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

At the End of the Program

You will complete the program with:

A certificate of completion from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions documenting the full curriculum.

Documented contact hours — 64 on-site, 44 online prior to on-site lab experience.

Documented clinical education experience toward ABPTS board certification. Applicants for the Electrophysiologic Clinical Specialist credential must submit at least one, and no more than three, individual learning experiences related to clinical electrophysiologic physical therapy completed within the past ten years, and those experiences must be with a physical therapist board-certified in clinical electrophysiology or a physician board-certified in electrodiagnostic testing. This course satisfies those requirements.

The practical skills to begin performing studies under appropriate supervision, and a professional network of instructors and classmates in a very small specialty.

A Straight Answer About Certification

This program is training, not certification. Completing it does not by itself make you a certified electroneuromyographer, and no eight-day course from any provider can.

The recognized credential in this field for physical therapists is the Electrophysiologic Clinical Specialist (ECS), awarded by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. No other certifications are recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS), or Medicare, and physical therapists using other certification credentials are not recognized as qualified providers of EMG/NCS. Earning board certification requires a current unrestricted license, thousands of hours of direct patient care in clinical electrophysiology, documented clinical education experiences under a board-certified specialist, and passing a rigorous examination administered by ABPTS. Physicians pursuing electrodiagnostic credentials follow their own separate pathway through their specialty boards.

What this program does is give you the foundation that pathway is built on — the didactic knowledge, the supervised hands-on hours, and the instructor relationships. It is the beginning of a serious credentialing journey, not the end of one.

We would rather tell you that now than have you discover it in November.

This program is a strong fit if you:

  • Treat neuromuscular conditions and are repeatedly sending patients elsewhere for the study that would answer your question
  • Want to build a diagnostic service line that differentiates your practice
  • Are a physical therapist beginning the pathway toward ECS board certification
  • Have tried to learn this from books, videos, or a weekend course and found it insufficient

It is not a fit if you:

  • Are not licensed in one of the professions listed above
  • Are looking for a credential you can advertise immediately upon completion
  • Are an experienced electromyographer seeking advanced content — this program is designed for the beginner and early intermediate practitioner

The on-site session is held at EMG Solutions in Montgomery — a working electrodiagnostic training center, not a hotel ballroom. You will train in the same kind of environment in which you will eventually practice.

Class Size is Limited

Class size is capped at 16 participants with a student to teacher ratio of no more than 8:1. Once the seats are allocated and the equipment is committed, enrollment closes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need prior EMG experience? No. The program is designed for the beginner. It starts with instrumentation and normal findings and builds from there.

Will I be able to perform studies when I finish? You will have performed the core upper and lower extremity motor, sensory, late response, and needle examination studies yourself, under direct supervision, over 64 hours. Where you go from there depends on your profession’s scope of practice, your state’s regulations, your supervision arrangement, and your own continued practice.

Is this a certification? No. It is a university continuing education program that issues a certificate of completion. See the section above for a full explanation of how it relates to ABPTS board certification.

How much of the program is hands-on? Of the 64 onsite hours, 56 are lab hours and 8 are lecture (Pathology I). The online component is 44 hours of didactic instruction.

What is the student-to-equipment ratio? Two students per EMG machine and per plinth.

Can I attend only part of the program? This course is built as a comprehensive learning experience. While attendees may choose to leave early, they will only receive continuing education credits for the portion of the course that has been fully completed. Registration fees will not be prorated or refunded for time not attended.

Is continuing education credit available? Currently applying for continuing education credits through multiple states for 108 credit hours.

What happens if I need to cancel?

Refund policy if a participant cancels: 

30 days or more before the event:

  • If participant has not accessed online courses 30 days or more out, 100% refund minus payment processing fees (up to 3%).
  • If participant has accessed the online courses, then 50% refund minus payment processing fees (up to 3%).

14 days to 29 days before the event

  • 50% refund minus payment processing fees (up to 3%).
